How to Easily Create a Halftone Dispersion Effect in Photoshop

Photoshop Effects

The halftone dispersion effect is a bold and stylish way to add motion and texture to your designs. It mimics the look of elements breaking apart into halftone dots, creating a dynamic blend between structure and fragmentation. In this tutorial, you’ll learn how to create this effect in Photoshop using a simple combination of a layer mask and the Color Halftone filter.

One of the great things about this method is its versatility—you can apply it to text, shapes, or even images with minimal effort. The process is fast, fully editable, and doesn’t rely on any third-party plugins. With just a few steps, you’ll be able to give your designs a punch of energy and a distinct print-like aesthetic.

Step 1

Open Photoshop and make a new file at any size you want. In this case, I will make mine at 1800 × 1200 px with the background color set to #31393C.

Step 2

Select the Horizontal Type Tool (T) and type your text. In this case, and for you to better see the effect, I will simply use the letter "M".

Step 3

With your text layer selected, go to Type > Convert to Shape.

Step 4

Pick the Direct Selection Tool (A) in the toolbar and select the 2 left anchor points.

Step 5

While holding the Shift key, drag the 2 anchor points to the left as shown.

Step 6

With the shape text layer selected, click on the "Add layer mask" icon in the Layers Panel.

Step 7

With the layer mask active, select the Gradient Tool (G).

Step 8

Be sure to have the following options enabled in the top toolbar, then click and drag (from left to right) over the artboard to make a gradient over the mask.

Step 9

With the mask still selected, go to Filter > Pixelate > Color Halftone. Apply the following settings and click OK.

Step 10

To give the effect even more interest, go to Layer > Layer Style > Drop Shadow. Apply the following settings and click OK.

Conclusion

As you've seen, creating a halftone dispersion effect in Photoshop is both simple and highly customizable. With just a layer mask and the Color Halftone filter, you can produce a striking visual result that adds texture, motion, and a retro print vibe to your designs. What makes this technique so useful is how easily it adapts to different kinds of content—text, shapes, or even full images.

This effect works great for posters, album covers, and digital graphics, adding an extra layer of energy and style with minimal effort. And since it's all done non-destructively, you can easily tweak the gradient, halftone size, or shadow until the look feels just right.
