How to Create a Simple Geometric Origami Effect in Photoshop

Photoshop Shapes Composition

Creating a geometric origami effect in Photoshop is a simple yet striking way to build modern abstract compositions. By using only a single Gradient Overlay layer style, you can simulate folded paper surfaces with clean light and shadow transitions. This technique gives you full control over the look, making it easy to experiment with different shapes, sizes, and colors, and to arrange them into unique layouts that feel contemporary, elegant, and visually dynamic.

Step 1

Open Photoshop and make a new file at any size you want. In this case, I will make mine at 1800 x 1200 px using a black background so you can better see the effect.

Step 2

Select the Rectangle Tool and make a square of approximately 450 x 450 px.

Step 3

Go to Layer > Layer Style > Gradient Overlay. Apply the following settings and click OK.

Step 4

Go to Layer > Smart Objects > Convert to Smart Object.

Step 5

Rotate the square -45º as shown.

Step 6

Hold the Alt+Shift keys on your keyboard, then click and drag the square to make a copy and move it up as shown.

Step 7

Go to Edit > Transform > Flip Horizontal and then go to Edit > Transform > Flip Vertical.

Step 8

Keep duplicating, moving, and rotating different squares to form any composition you like.

Step 9

To change the color of the whole composition, go to Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Gradient Map.

Step 10

Pick any Gradient Map you like (or create your own) and set the Method to "Smooth".

Conclusion

Now that you’ve learned how to create a simple geometric origami effect in Photoshop, you can apply this technique to any design project. Experiment with different gradients, shapes, and arrangements to develop unique patterns that suit your creative needs. Whether used as backgrounds, standalone artwork, or part of a larger composition, this method offers endless possibilities to craft modern, minimal, and visually engaging designs with ease.
