Photoshop Text Effects
Creating a long shadow effect is a popular technique for adding depth and drama to your typography, and it can be especially effective in posters, social media graphics, or any design that needs a bold visual impact. In this tutorial, you’ll learn how to make a Long Shadow Text Effect in Photoshop using a very simple approach. We'll use a Smart Object for the text, apply a few quick transformations to build the shadow, and finish it off using the Blur Gallery. This method is easy to follow, flexible, and fully customizable for your future projects.
Open Photoshop and make a new file at any size you want. In this case, I will make mine at 1800 x 1200 px using a white background so you can better see the effect.
Select the Horizontal Type Tool (T) and, using any font, type your text. Here I will simply type "long shadow" using the "Freshman" font.
With the text layer selected, go to Layer > Smart Objects > Convert to Smart Object.
Press Ctrl+J on your keyboard to duplicate the layer and rename the bottom layer to "Shadow".
Go to Edit > Transform > Flip Vertical and drag the text down until both bottom parts touch each other as shown.
Go to Edit > Transform > Perspective. Drag any of the two bottom anchor points outside the artboard area as shown.
Press Ctrl+T on your keyboard, drag the middle bottom anchor point down as shown, and then hit the Enter key on your keyboard to commit the changes.
Go to Filter > Blur Gallery > Tilt-Shift.
Drag the baseline to the base of your text.
Set any blur value that you like and click OK in the top toolbar to commit the changes.
With the Shadow layer selected in the Layers Panel, click on the "Add layer mask" icon.
Select the Gradient Tool (G). Be sure to have the Black to White gradient selected and the following options in the top toolbar. Then simply click and drag from bottom to top to add a layer mask gradient that will soften the long shadow.
Now that you know how to create a Long Shadow Text Effect in Photoshop, you can easily reuse this effect in future projects. Simply replace the text inside the Smart Object with any message you want, and the effect will be automatically applied. This makes the technique ideal for headers, titles, or any design that could benefit from a bold and stylish shadow effect.
