Abstract Design in Illustrator
Creating complex abstract designs might seem like a task for experts, but with the right tools and a smart approach, anyone can achieve stunning results. In this tutorial, I’ll show you how to transform a simple shape into dynamic compositions using Adobe Illustrator. The best part is that you only need a single shape. Using radial repetition and the Appearance panel, we’ll build intricate, eye-catching designs efficiently and non-destructively. These techniques will help you experiment with different styles, adjust details on the fly, and create professional-quality artwork with ease.
Open Illustrator and make a new file at any size you want. In this case, I will make mine at 1800 x 1200 px using a black background.
Using your preferred method draw a simple shape. Here I will use an oval with sharp endings.
With your object selected, go to Object > Repeat > Radial.
Click and drag the top circle modifier to make the diameter bigger.
Click and drag the Instances slider up to add more copies of your shape.
Go to Effect > Distort & Transform > Transform.
Set the Scale of both Horizontal and Vertical to about 95%.
Set any amount of Copies that you want, in this case, I will set it to 30.
Lastly, under Rotate, change the angle to 5º and click OK in the Transform Effect window.
With the main design done, go to Window > Appearance.
Click on the "Add New Stroke" icon and set the stroke color to black with a 2 pt Weight.
Lastly, select the Fill layer and set the fill to the default "White, Black" gradient.
