Creative Shape Effects
Creating a stamp shape in Illustrator can add a classic and professional touch to your designs, perfect for logos, labels, or decorative badges. Today, you’ll learn how to easily create a dynamic stamp shape that automatically adapts to any shape you apply it to. We’ll achieve this using the powerful Appearance Panel, allowing you to keep your artwork fully editable and flexible. With just a few steps, you’ll have a reusable stamp shape that can be customized for any project.
Open Illustrator and create a new file at any size you like. In this example, I’ll use 900 x 900 px with a gray background so the effect is easier to see.
Select the Rectangle Tool (M) and draw a rectangle or square. Mine will be 750 x 750 px, with a black stroke and a light gray fill.
With the square selected, go to Window > Appearance.
Click on Stroke and apply the following settings.
Click the aarrow icon next to Stroke.
Click on Opacity and set it to 0%.
Click on the Path opacity (the bottom layer).
Check the Knockout Group option (you should now see a minus sign in the box).
Finally, check Knockout Group again (this time you should see a checkmark in the box).
Now simply add your design on top of the stamp shape you’ve created.
You can reshape the square and change its color at any time, or modify the shape as you wish, and the effect will remain intact. This is because we used the Appearance Panel and, in the Stroke settings, selected the option Align dashes to corners and path ends.
