The sliced photo effect is a dynamic design technique that instantly adds energy and movement to any image. Whether you’re looking to give portraits a modern twist, add an abstract touch to landscapes, or create eye-catching graphics for posters and social media, this effect offers endless creative possibilities. Today, I’ll show you how to create this striking effect—quick, simple, and perfect for beginners—using just one layer and Photoshop’s built-in tools, following a fast and flexible method that you can apply to any photo in minutes.
Open your image in Photoshop.
Go to Layer > Smart Objects > Convert to Smart Object.
Go to Filter > Distort > Wave.
In the "Wave" options window, apply the following settings and click OK.
Note: You may change these values according to your image, but for better results keep the "Number of Generators" at 2 and the "Type" set to "Square".
Select the "Filter Effect Mask Thumbnail."
Select the Rectangular Marquee Tool (M) and draw a rectangle over your image as shown.
Lastly, go to Edit > Fill. Apply the following settings and click OK.
Now that you know how easy it is to create a Sliced Photo Effect in Photoshop, you can select the filter effect mask thumbnail and move it to any part of your image that you like. Additionally, you can edit the Wave effect to your liking and easily replace the photo without having to recreate the entire effect, thanks to it being a Smart Object.
