This retro chrome text effect for Photoshop is inspired by cheesy 1980s TV shows, games and movie titles. Recreate this iconic effect in Photoshop for your next project by using this file. It is easy to enter your own text, change the font, use vector shapes or even apply the effect to your company logo.

This file uses Smart Objects for text layers and also as a way to quickly update the colors. You don't need to worry about updating the stroke gradient or depth effects just because you change the main gradient fill. The background color and grid colors can also be customised or the grid can be turned off completely if desired.

Also for some finishing touches we have included lens flare graphics in Smart Objects which can be manually placed on the brightest parts of the text for specular highlights, and an optional vintage texture overlay which can be turned on or off.

How to use:

  • Open '80s Chrome Text Effect.psd' in Photoshop CS6+
  • Double click the 'Main Text' Smart Object layer icon
  • Update the text and save and close the Smart Object
  • Repeat last 2 steps for 'Secondary Text'
  • Locate the 'Colors' Smart Object and double click the icon
  • Set the top and bottom gradient colors, save and close the Smart Object
  • Find the 'Specular Highlights' group
  • Position the 'Lens Flare' Smart Object layers on the brightest parts of the text
