Designer Showcase: Alon Avissar

Alon Avissar is an Art Director and Illustrator working and living in Washington DC. He recently reached out to us, and we are blown away by his double exposure portrait series and had to share with you. Alon’s work is incredibly inspiring and beautifully balanced.

He's worked on web and print work in a freelance capacity with heavy hitting clients such as National Geographic, Sirius XM, and iheartradio.

Alon's Featured Work: Seasonal Beauties

As mentioned before, the main focus for his work right now is on a double exposure artwork, combining beautiful nature photography with portraits.

Alon mentions on his Double Exposure Image Gallery:

Since early last year, I have been experimenting with multiple exposures designs. These works have yielded much interest by clients and have been covered by numerous art, design and photography websites. -Alon Avissar

The work that really caught our eye? His Seasonal Beauties, which feature silhouettes of women blessed with strong bone structures and he combines them with nature themed imagery from each season.

The colors are gentile and pleasing, and the way Alon cropped the foliage is stunning.

80's Icon Poster

We couldn't finish this Designers Spotlight without showcasing Alon's 80's Icons poster. I hope you find yourself geeking out over this work. There's something to be said for capturing characters in a minimal way. I'm especially thrilled about the Mario and Luigi icons, as I spent quite a bit of time on Nintendo as a kid!

National Geographic Email Campaigns

Alon’s commercial design style for clients is incredibly clean, easy to read, and well organized. Here’s a great example of layouts that capture his web style in National Geographic email campaigns:

Get To Know Alon

I had the pleasure of asking Alon some questions about his work and where he finds his inspiration.

  • What are the biggest challenges and benefits you face from being a freelancer? There are definitely pros and cons to working as a full time freelancer. The biggest down side is the occasional work inconsistency. Remember that unlike a full time employee, as a freelancer any day you don't work is a day you don't get paid.

With that being said, the freedom to choose what days you do and do not want to work is a luxury I am really privileged to have. Even more importantly than the flexible scheduling is having the opportunity to collaborate with so many different companies and talented teams of people on all sorts of different projects. This ever changing work environment really helps you refine your design skills at a very rapid pace, especially when first starting out on your design career.?
  • What is your favorite part of the design process and why???I believe that essentially all design boils down to is using visuals to help convey a certain message to the viewer. Gaining an understanding to who your client is and what message they are trying to put across is always at the core of what the designer is responsible for.

??I always try to create what the client has in mind and then I go the extra mile by creating even more design ideas that the client might not have even considered for their brand. When you then present your work and exceed their expectations, you can see their face light up to the point where they get re-inspired about their own project all over again. It's the best feeling you can get as a designer. ?
  • How do you keep up with trends and learn new skills???I try to stay on top current and older trends by visiting as many art, photography and design websites/blogs as possible. Sometimes inspiration can come from even the most unlikely of sources. So the more stuff you dig through, the better.

In terms of learning new skills, I found that there is no substitute for the trial and error method. You just have to play around with all the different programs as much as possible and keep learning new tricks and shortcuts along the way. Also, the internet is a beautiful thing. You can literally find tutorials on any effect, style or method you are trying to achieve.

I found that practice and persistence is the best path towards success.

Thanks, Alon, for the inspiring words and for sharing your work.
