8 Nordic Runes Symbols Fonts and Typefaces

I won't 'rune' this for you

Fonts and typefaces inspired by Nordic rune symbols add depth and strength to a design.

Designers need to keep a wide variety of fonts and typefaces on hand for their different projects and branding campaigns. Because the demand for fonts is so great, you can find thousands of them online, both for sale and for free. However, most of these fonts are pretty specific and quite modern, which is great, but doesn’t always meet the need.

At Medialoot, we try to think outside the box a little bit. We take creative leaps when it comes to our designs and try to fill in gaps that might exist on other resource sites.

All this to say, we’ve created a really cool Nordic rune font.

And as a result, we decided to put together a list of other Nordic rune symbol fonts and typefaces for your pleasure.

So, check out our list of free and premium fonts below! And, let us know how you plan on using your Nordic font!

Vector Nordic Runes and Font - $8

Our very own Tony Thomas created this awesome set of vector symbols to be used for whatever fun project you might be working on. The set is made in two groups, each of 31 runes. The first set has clean, modern strokes that can be edited. The second group has a more distressed and grunge look that can be applied to the first set of runes.

While the runes of this font lean very heavily towards symbols and might not be the easiest to read, they’ll definitely make an impression when used correctly!

Norse Typeface - Free

If you’re looking for a Nordic typeface that is more inspired by rune symbols than created to imitate the symbols, you’ll love this font. Norse is a perfect balance between more modern typefaces, with thin and clean lines, and traditional rune symbols.

The set comes with a regular font option, a bold option, and the complete runic alphabet. This symbol font is perfect for posters, social media posts, and stationary.

Viking Elder Runes - Free

We’re getting back to the roots of Nordic rune symbols again with this font. Viking evolved from a previously created font called Elder Futhark Runes, which was much closer to actual runes than a font. Because Elder Futhark only has 24 characters, Viking Elder Runes includes extra characters to match the 26 letter alphabet.

With this download, you’ll get the regular and bold options, which are varied enough to be used for a multitude of different projects.

Nordic Font - $17

And now back to more modern interpretations of Nordic rune symbols. Nordic is another example of how modern typography can be combined with ancient symbols to create an entirely new range of fonts. The font combines Scandinavian runes with the elegant, clean geometric forms seen in typefaces today.

Nordic font comes in two faces with three different weights, equaling six alterations, including Nordic regular, bold, and light. Because of the extravagance of the font, it is perfect for large designs, like banners, posters, and headers.

Tomahawk Font – Free

Because Nordic runes, or more specifically Futhark, started with Germanic tribes and then spread through migration, it’s extremely interesting to see how different countries adopted and changed it. Tomahawk has the structure and weight of Nordic rune symbols, but also includes very specific Norwegian characters.

The slight variations of this font make it a fun option to play with. If you find yourself in need of Norwegian characters, then grab this font while you can!

Sequi Typeface – Free

Sequi might not be recognizable immediately as a Nordic rune symbol font, but the foundation is very much there. The influence can clearly be seen in the bolder version of the typeface, but is also hinted at in the exaggerated lines and rigid edges.

Of course, because this is a modern ‘retelling’ of the typeface, the Latin letterings are easy to make out, making it the perfect font for displays and social media posts. The bolder version of the text would be awesome for posters and stationary, as well.

Woodwarrior Font – Free

Due to the limitations of the time, Nordic rune symbols tended to be thicker and heavier, something clearly represented in Woodwarrior. As the name suggests, the typeface takes inspiration from the power and strength found in ancient Nordic people. Because of the uniqueness of the font, it’s probably best used sparingly, such as for headlines or headers.

The free typeface is an all caps font and comes in three different weights. Woodwarrior also includes a variety of alternative glyphs, which only tie the modern to the ancient even more.

Quarz 974 Light Font – Free

Just as Woodwarrior represented the strength of traditional rune symbols, the Quarz light font represents the lighter aspect of the typeface. Still keeping in line with Nordic symbols, Quarz has managed to merge the past with the clean and elegant characteristic that are more often seen in modern typeface.

As is the case with most Nordic symbols, Quarz relies heavily on geometric shapes to craft its characters. With the sharp lines that point to its roots in runes, Quarz is an ideal font for social media posts, branding, and logos.
