Introducing Rollover Downloads
When it comes to download limits, it has been a long and winding road for us here at MediaLoot.
We started off with unlimited downloads. This didn’t work well (or last long) because people were paying one monthly fee and downloading everything on the site. We couldn’t pay our designers, long-term members were getting shorted, and well… you get the idea.
Following that we launched the multi-plan system we have now with download credits and a set number of downloads you could have each month. This has worked fairly well with one exception: members who didn’t use all of their downloads in one month (which were many) lost those downloads and couldn’t use them again next month. In effect, members were penalized for not using all of their downloads, even if they didn’t need them that month. That’s not what we want to happen…
Now, thanks to your suggestions, we have a big announcement to make: Rollover downloads are here.
Introducing Rollover Downloads
Effective immediately—all download credits will carry over to the next month for as long as you are an active member. You paid for those downloads, and now you get to keep them. Full details are as follows:
The Details
Basically, rollover downloads work exactly as you would expect (similar to many wireless carriers and other services). For those who are interested, here are the gritty details:
- Rollover downloads apply to all MONTHLY premium members. Starting now.
- At the end of each month, any remaining downloads will be added to your next month total. If you’re on the 15 download/mo plan, you’ll just get another 15 added to whatever you have now.
- These download credits will last for as long as you are a paying member. If you cancel your subscription (why would you do that?) you will lose any rollover credits you have remaining.
- None of this applies to free accounts, free downloads, or yearly members.
...And that’s basically it. If we find any other details we need to add we will update this post and let everyone know.

so what happen with the yearly subscription like mine?, my account expired soon and i still 300+ download left, if i renew it, can i do it in a basic plan and keep the same rollover?..

Yup, you can do that—as long as you’re still a member you can keep your downloads. We don’t have the system ready for yearly accounts to switch to monthly or other plans, so when it is time for your renewal just contact us and we’ll set you up.

Nicely done. Happy to see yearly plans addressed in 1st posts. Good news, indeed, but the yearly conversion kinda sux eggs. I really shouldn’t have to buy anything if the statement “You paid for those downloads, and now you get to keep them,” is going to be applied fairly.
What about using a form of logarithmic decay on credits beginning at the plan’s cutoff date; eg, you lose just .1 download/mo., but by 6 mos. you’re losing 1/mo,, and by 2 yrs, you loose at such a rate = to plan value/mo. With a proviso to reinstate credits upon re-enrollment. These numbers are just for example, actual mileage will vary.
There are lots of ways to achieve better parity with yearly credits; honestly the very best way would be to think of them as credit packages without any time limit.

Unfortunately that’s not really possible for us given our current prices and resource schedule. ML requires a lot of time and expense to keep updated, and in order to keep service at a high level (read: more resources) we need to maintain an active membership.
If users could keep credits forever (or even for many years with a decay) then there would be little reason to stay subscribed, and those who did would be getting treated unfairly because other members could just signup for a big plan, cancel, and re-join whenever they wanted to download new stuff. It leads to an unsustainable situation for us and a bad situation for members who are active.

In the previous comment Mason was talking about hypothetically making all accounts unlimited again, which wouldn’t make sense for us at this point, and would result in lots of cancelling and re-joining.
However we really appreciate our early subscribers, especially those who stuck with us through the tricky times. They deserve unlimited accounts, so we’ll never take those privileges away.

Well, everything seems to be right about Rollover downloads except one thing that the members can be penalized for not using their downloads.

$29.99 just to keep my already paid for credits? That seems just stupidly high. The idea of making me pay just to keep things I have already paid for it stupid. Now put yourself in my shoes right now. I am a designer who loves to use photoshop. I don’t really have to many design clients, so my budget is low as can be expected. I have a monthly plan for 5 a month. I probably use 2-3 of those. Over time those add up, and I have enough to last me a good while. I look to cancel the plan, but see that this company I thought I adored is now trying to scam me out of my well owned and paid for credits, just to make a buck it seems. I can just cancel my plan and forget about the almost $100 I have spent over the months, but we all know that won’t happen. My other choice is to pay a stupidly high amount of my money to a company (that seems as if they do not give a crap about their members) and get pretty much nothing back. No credits what so ever. And to add on to that it only last a year. We also all know that that I will not be doing that either. You have a very unhappy customer that what’s to find a compromise.
