How to Create a Vintage Style Folded Logomark in Illustrator

Adding a folded effect to a logomark is a great way of adding depth and character to a simple shape. There is something very intriguing about a 2 dimensional graphic which possesses 3 dimensional properties. This tutorial will walk you through the process of designing a folded 'M' logomark in Adobe Illustrator.

Step 1

Begin by sketching out ideas for your logomark on paper, it is much easier to experiment with different ideas this way, rather than trying to do it with design software. When you have an idea for your logomark, scan or photograph it and import it into Illustrator.

Step 2

Double click the layer with your sketch on it in the Layers panel and check the 'Template' option to lock the layer and dim the image to 50%. This will make your sketch less distracting and easier to trace.

Step 3

Draw some basic shapes, such as rounded rectangles or circles to trace the simple parts of your logomark.

Step 4

Use the vector tools in Illustrator to tweak the shapes to fit your sketch. This process will vary greatly depending on your logomark, in this example I rotated the rectangles, changed the corner radii and manually drew some inverted rounded corners where the diagonal shapes meet the vertical shapes and each other.

Step 5

Update the colors of your background and logomark. Using light and dark grays will create a vintage black and white film style effect.

Step 6

For the shading start by drawing a single line that tapers towards the end like an overly stretched triangle. Set the color to black and transparency to 10%.

Step 7

Duplicate the triangle multiple times, with even spacing between. Adjust the height as necessary so that the wider ends stay hidden from sight and the lines appear to get gradually shorted as they approach the 'fold'.

Step 8

Repeat this process for all other 'folds'

Step 9

And there we have it, the vintage style logomark is complete.
